As I Remember

Sunrise we met in late September
Between a humming coffee shop and barren parking lot
Parked by your car clutching the end of your sleeves
Dressed for the afternoon weather
Though the morning’s cold, no matter
You’d feel so even in yellow heat of summer
A couple hours drive for the coast
Spent holding an imaginary mic
Open windows got your hair across your face
Notes refuse to be lost in the strands
I’d join but I’d forget the words, blame it on those eyes
Couldn’t help but see it as,
A couple’s hour drive to the coast
Waves fell softly with a burst of blue
But all I saw was you
Water to your knees, turned to direct it towards me
Walked the coast, stopping to pick up your seashells
Talking of all things that ran our minds
Saving the world our own ways
Essays we’ve pushed til next sunday
I almost told you that day
But that’s too deep
Soon after you wanted to visit the city
It’s been awhile since you’ve seen the life of it
You point at a million gifts
Jewelry for your neck and your wrists
If I had the pockets I’d help you chose them
Passing people on the street with a smile for each
The best I saw were saved for me
Take me to all your favorite places I’ve never been
If it were another time we might have held hands
I’d love to go back to the coast again
